The Legal & Prosecution Department was established around 1960s as the Prosecution Division under the City Secretariat. In 1970, its name changed to Legal Division and later on in 1973, it became a separate department by the name of Legal Department. In 1976, the name changed again to Department of Legal Affairs.
Beginning July 1, 2011, it was known as the Department of Legal & Prosecution. This department is headed by a Director, assisted by two Deputy Directors who each head the Planning & Legal Administration Division and Legal Implementation Division. A total of 8 Legal Officers and 12 Assistant Legal Officers is also the backbone of the department.
To provide progressive and efficient legislation in assisting the Mayor to make Kuala Lumpur a World Class City.
