THE social demographics of Kuala Lumpur are changing and the Kuala Lumpur Structure Plan 2040 (KLSP2040) will play a critical role in ensuring the city’s development complements its new social landscape.
Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad said among key factors which would define the city were slower population growth, higher number of senior citizens and smaller average households.
“The city’s population is expected to grow at 1.05% annually and projected to reach 2.25 million people by 2040.
“Of this figure, 17.3% will comprise the elderly aged 65 and above. This projection is a 6.7% increase from the number of senior citizens in 2018,” he said.
Khalid said Kuala Lumpur had also observed a decline in terms of its average household size.
