The City Theater which is classified as one of the 22 public buildings gazetted as a heritage building under the Antiquities Act is one of the oldest Theaters in Malaysia. The City Theater building is more than 100 years old. This City Theater was once very famous among activists and art lovers, now it has been upgraded as a stage that is very suitable for theater and musical performances, also placing it in the list of the most advanced stages in Malaysia.

This City Theater was once very famous among activists and art lovers, now it has been upgraded as a stage that is very suitable for theater and musical performances, also placing it in the list of the most advanced stages in Malaysia.
The upgrading and reopening of the City Stage is also one of Kuala Lumpur City Hall's efforts and responsibilities towards the cultural development policy, which includes creating space and opportunities to create and perform by activists, movers and art groups for the local community and foreign tourists to enjoy art products, especially stage performance art.
A total of 32 art events that have been successfully organized for the 2004 Program, 28 events for the 2005 Program and 24 events for 2006 and 25 events for 2007, 25 events for 2008, 25 events for 2009, 35 events for 2010, 28 events for the year 2011 and 25 events for 2012 which include the arts of various races and performance genres such as Bangsawan Theatre, Mak Yong and Mek Mulung Traditional Theatre, Modern Malay Theatre, English Theatre, Chinese Theatre, Chinese Opera, English Broadway Musicals, Local Musicals and International, Chinese Classical Orchestra, Theater Festival, Dance Festival, International Piano Competition, Poetry Competition, Dance Drama as well as Contemporary Dance and Indian Classical Dance.
It is hoped that these arts programs will be able to realize DBKL's hopes and wishes to make Kuala Lumpur a City of Culture to attract citizens of various races, nationalities and religions as well as tourists to enjoy the cultural and artistic products available in Kuala Lumpur.
In addition to that, the City Theater has also received a very encouraging response from filmmakers, commercials and dramas to be used as a filming location. Several reality shows such as 'Malaysian Idol' and 'So You Think You Can Dance' have also been held at this historic Theatre.
