Mayor of Kuala Lumpur Champions Climate-Driven Urban Action at ASUF2025

Kuala Lumpur opened the KL City Stage at the ASEAN Sustainable Urbanization Forum 2025 (ASUF2025) with the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur leading the charge to put cities at the heart of climate solutions.

Dato' Seri TPr Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif called on ASEAN capitals to localise global climate goals through people-focused, outcome-driven action. The inaugural KL Town Hall COP, first of its kind in ASEAN , set a powerful precedent by inviting citizens, businesses and partners to shape policies that directly impact their communities. This is leadership that doesn’t just talk about change. It invites you to build it.

Key messages from the Mayor’s leadership at The Kuala Lumpur Townhall COP:-

Cities as the frontline of climate action. Kuala Lumpur is aligning its Local Plan 2040, Climate Action Plan 2050, and Low Carbon Society Blueprint 2030 with ASEAN’s sustainability priorities.

From vision to measurable impact:

  • Zero Waste Ramadan: 11,000 kg of food rescued, avoiding ~21 tonnes CO₂e.

  • Green & Blue Network: 254 km of connectors, 4,700 ha of parks/rivers linked, 50,000 trees planted annually.

  • Clean Mobility Push: 86 diesel buses replaced with electric, cutting route emissions by ~60%.

Replicable model for ASEAN: The Town Hall COP concept will be shared across the region, inspiring other cities to adopt this participatory governance model ahead of COP30.

The Mayor’s message is clear : inclusive urbanisation is the cornerstone of a resilient future. Kuala Lumpur is not only hosting this week’s ASEAN cities events but is also setting the standard for how city leadership can mobilise action at scale.
